With someone like you around, super 8 is going to be around for a lot longer. Thanks so much for your contributions to our community.

It's really nothing. I just dig working with other film makers and always have. I doubt I'll have much impact on the super 8 community but thanks for the compliment.

Can the frames be sent to us on CDRom discs or some sort of computer storage also? I was thinking we could edit and do our post work on uncompressed higher resolution 24fps files before transferring to tape? Would there be any benifits to receive files that way compared to miniDV?

Well, as it stands, the DV8 takes about 20 minutes to transfer 50 feet. I purposely made the transport slow and steady; more like an optical printer. Also, it lets us monitor and correct exposures on the fly, if necessary, so that only a few frames of raw footage are affected by density or color shifts. To also export the final footage as still frames would only add to the time involved and I really don't think you'd see a benefit for the additional cost it would create.

Besides, if I increased my capture data rate to 13 megs per second, which is as high as I can go, a CD won't hold much information. As it stands, you can fit about 60 seconds of BetaSP quality (6mps) material on a CD. That's how I archive commercials I produce and 60 seconds is pretty much the max, depending on how much movement there is. So I don't think the still frame route is worth it, really. The miniDV transfers I've done so far are stunning. Really nice.

Oh, please! I'm blushing here. Thanks for the kind words everyone but I'm not worthy, really.

(wish I had something ready to transfer now - I would have sent In My Image to you)

Well, I think you're down in PAL country. I'm still trying to figure out how to accomodate that format without having to export a ton of still frames sequences. But if you want to send me some out-takes that match footage you've already Ranked, it would be fun to see a comparison. I have no expectations that the DV8 will be better but it would be interesting to see what the differences are.

Thanks for all the work, Roger.

Are you going to test my films with that or just the WP? I emailed you couple times, but no reply. Can you give me an update whether you have time to transfer my film yet? Thanks.

    Hi!

I just finished your test roll using the DV8. It looked really nice. Some of the footage seemed a little soft but the lighting was really nice, especially on the shots inside of the lady and her baby. Also, did you change cameras in mid-roll? The frame line shifted several times, depending on whether it was inside or outside, it seemed. I wasn't sure what was going on. I corrected the shift but was just curious.

Hi roger - yeah that'd be cool - I'll send you a roll with a cd of it transfered as an .avi file (is that format okay? - or would you prefer a minidv tape?) --- I think as far as pal systems go the best thing might just be to buy some pal gear -- a tv and vcr -- these things are pretty cheap in Australian right now (for the low end of the market - but still reasonable quality I think) -- remember too your dollar is worth twice as much as ours and at the moment you can get vcr's for about $299 Australian and tv's for the same --- if you really wanted I'm sure you could order one over the net somewhere -- I don't know - I'm not too technical myself but I imagine working in the gear/format is probably better than trying to get around it some other way

Anyway where do I send the dtuff to - is the address on your site?

    Scot M
